Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's movie "Pathaan" was released today in Bangladesh, attracting thousands of fans to the cinema and becoming the first Bollywood film to be released in the country in over half a century.
According to AFP, the action-packed spy thriller "Pathaan" broke local box office records when it was released in India in January, not only attracting a massive following in India but also globally for Shah Rukh Khan.
However, since Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971, authorities have been lobbied by local producers to ban Indian films from being released in the country, despite India's support for Bangladesh during the independence war.
18-year-old Sazzad Hossain, interviewed outside a cinema in the capital Dhaka, said, "I am so excited because this is the first time an Indian film has been released in Bangladesh."
He added, "We are all fans of Shah Rukh Khan. It's my first time watching one of his movies on the big screen."Due to the low quality of local films compared to the high production value and special effects of Bollywood productions, Bangladeshi films struggle to attract audiences, and even well-known local stars like Shakib Khan are aging.
Last month, the Bangladeshi government finally issued an order allowing for ten Indian or South Asian films to be released in the country each year.
